Bedtime for Toby
Baseman’s Toby is everyman, our junior high id that for most has long since been buried by adulthood. The artist embraces these transgressive drives through this cat-like creature that has appeared in his sketchbooks for over two decades. This exhibition featured the broad range of Baseman’s expression, including all new paintings, drawings, and collages, as well as a mini Art Toy retrospective, all speaking to the idea that art can be for the masses, that one can acquire a Baseman piece for as little as six dollars and become a part of his quest to democratize art.
Shown in 2005 at 2nd Street Gallery in Charlottesville, Virginia.
