When I found BOSKO’S LIFELESS BODY.

I was compelled to draw the moment right after I found Bosko dead on the bed, when I rushed out to the street holding him in my arms, looking to find my car, when a neighbor I didn’t know stopped me and asked if I needed help.

I wasn’t sure if I should share this.
I was shattered when I found him, trying to give him CPR, trying to blow air in his lungs to bring him back to life.

The next weeks I struggled to draw at all to either try to understand why his young life was taken away from me or to try to celebrate our special connection.

10 years ago today, we created
The Secret Order of the Camellias, a site-specific art installation and performative space at the Serpentine Gallery in London. This art installation celebrated my collaboration with Coach. Showcasing the wild beast characters that protect secrets and represent loyalty and friendship, guests were welcomed to join a special rite of passage into the Secret Order by offering their deepest darkest dreams at the Shrine of Buster Le Fauve.
My assistants blindfolded everyone who entered the shrine. They were instructed to release their written darkened dream onto the shrine. And I personally put a metal of Emmanuel Hare Ray around everyone’s neck. And each guest also took home a photo of themselves blindfolded in front of the shrine.

Remembering my father, Ben Baseman, on the 15th anniversary of his passing.
Of course, I think about him everyday.
15 years feels like a lifetime ago, yet his presence and my mom’s are with me everyday.
He lived an extraordinary life.
He lived through one of the most horrific events of mankind, survived, and thrived, raised a family and taught his children to be thoughtful, good, hard working people and not to limit their dreams.

We live in uncertain times, with the fear that similar authoritarian monsters who destroyed my parent’s homeland, are again raising their ugly heads.
We are still determined to complete our documentary, Mystical Creatures, about my father and mother’s life and tell their remarkable story.

Thank you, Dad. I always miss you.

Hearing about all the Airline Crashes are scary.
Wishing for more comforting days when Bosko was around to keep everyone safe!

I miss him more than anything!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BEVERLY.
My favorite cousin, Beverly, was the inspiration for my entire New Zealand museum exhibition, Memento Moa. I grew up with Beverly in the Fairfax District of LA, then she fell in love and moved to New Zealand, where she was wed, had a son, lived a wonderful life, but succumb to cancer. This first painting is of Beverly as one of my “Wildgirl’s” with a ChouChou Gary. The second image is the original photograph of us. If you scroll, you will find details from other paintings in the exhibition mixed with other family photos! I’m so grateful to have my museum show Memento Moa exhibited in both the North & South Islands of New Zealand!

TRUE STORY from one year ago!
This story now feels different after the recent passing of Bosko.

I was rushing to dinner at the Chateau Marmont, when a passed a couple at the doorway! I heard my name, Gary, called and I turn around. I see an attractive but nondescript couple. I didn’t recognize them at first till the woman said, it’s Sunrise! Well, there is only one Sunrise! I literally met her one year before at the Schindler House West House during an extraordinary exhibition of original Alex Katz paintings where Sunrise was the muse for every painting. It was such a special evening, I drew the event in my sketchbook. We haven’t seen each other but stayed friendly on instagram. She was kind to ask about Bosko. Then I remembered who she was married to. I looked at her partner next to her. And hiding behind his mild manner appearance and eye-glasses, was the Academy Award nominated starring actor Mark Ruffallo! I said hi, and explained how Bosko was the World’s Greatest Flying Cat. Mark shared that they have wonderful black cat named Inky that flies onto his shoulder too! At the end of sharing Black Cat Stories, I gave them both the PEACE THROUGH PURR pins, to remind the world of meditation and centering through our kitty’s purr. And we went on our way.
Since I have been working on a series of drawings from the Chateau, I had to draw our meeting of what Mark called “Les Chats.”
I hope I run into Sunrise & Mark again soon to give them a Bosko’s Bubble of Love pin!

Bosko was such a PASSIONATE CAT when he was OBSESSED with something.

He loved his DONUTS, especially the mom/pop shop of @kettleglazed

I miss BOSKO’S little face and lust for life.

I had a giant Snoopy plush as a lil kid, well, my big sister, Netta, did but when she went to college, it became mine. I always imagined Bosko’s gang of friends where my childhood plushes.

This drawing really captures Bosko’s personality!
