Celebrating Halloween, Americana, and photography, this book features over 300 vintage photographs, plus never-before-seen paintings by Baseman that show his zeal for black cats, skeletons, devils, and monsters.

“These photographs are works of art with both beauty and darkness. They’re surreal, but from real life. Many were taken half a century ago or more when technology was far different than now. These snapshots of Halloween show celebratory special occasions. Film was precious. To me, these photos are magical and inspiring,” says Gary Baseman.

A labor of love, Baseman has worked for years to assemble the book Nightmares of Halloween Past, which includes essays by him, as well as scholarly texts by Phyllis Galembo and Catherine Zuromskis on the history of Halloween costumes and photography.
