SAVE THE DATE: SAT, OCT 5 “Mythical Homeland” at Shulamit Gallery, Venice, CA
Gary Basemen showcases motifs of nostalgia and home in an installation honoring his family’s legacy. “Mythical Homeland” will be on view from October 5-December 14, 2013.
An extension of his recent retrospective The Door Is Always Open at the Skirball Cultural Center, Baseman’s solo exhibition at Shulamit Gallery will continue the exploration of home and heritage. Mythical Homeland includes a literal birch tree forest as homage to his parents’ legacy. Both escaped from the Nazis during WWII. Baseman’s father’s surivival is owed to the forests, where he resided with other freedom fighters for years. Suspended among dozens of life sized trees and on the walls of the gallery will be Baseman’s paintings, drawings and photographs of his lively creatures and mysterious characters. Overlaid in fantastical, allegorical compositions is the artist’s personal narrative that delves deep into real and imagined histories.
