“Spanish Eyes” (Baseman’s Sketchbook)
Baseman carries a sketchbook wherever he goes. Take a peek inside Sketchbooks #156 and #157 to see how he captures the magic of Spain.
Earlier this summer Baseman spent time in Madrid, Menorca, and Barcelona. He revisited the work of his old friends Hieronymous Bosch (Bosko’s namesake) and Pablo Picasso at Museo del Prado and Museo Reina Sofía. He spent hours in the architectural delights of Antoní Gaudi. And of course, as is Baseman’s usual ritual, he ate and documented his dining experiences.
“Right now I refer to these drawings as ‘Spanish Eyes, my travels through Europe.’ Spain was one country I visited this trip. I still feel like I’m coming out of the pandemic, surprised when I travel and remember that there’s so much to see and experience out there in the world. I’m grateful to all who welcome me wherever I go. Even if I’m away from LA, there’s nothing like feeling like I’m always home. Spain, in particular, always feels like home to me,” the artist says.
Baseman will return to Spain in October 2024 to lead workshops at Quarantine’s “Interzone”, a sold out 6-day “purgatory for artists” who will give up their phones the entire time to transform their artistic vision. Interzone will take place at the historic Lazaretto of Maó in Menorca.
